On Saturday, May 18, a bevy of volunteers walked around Lake Gregory, up and down Lake Gregory Drive and through downtown Crestline, picking up litter left behind by other folks.
According to Rick Dinon, one of the organizers of Clean Up Crestline, there were about 22 people who volunteered; more than half were visitors to the mountain. Local participants included representatives of the Rotary Club of Crestline-Lake Gregory, the Crestline Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Gregory Yacht Club.
Four kayaks, Dinon noted, helped clean the water’s edge. The upper and lower lake trails were picked up as well as the areas around the roadway. Additionally, Lake Drive was picked up from the lake to the Shell station.
Volunteers filled 28 bags, weighing a total of 38 pounds. About 40 percent of what was picked up was plastic; most of the rest was paper. Odd items included juice containers, packing material, a windshield wiper and a lizard skin. The most common items were cigarette butts and water bottle caps. An effort was made to pull out any discarded or broken fishing line.
In general, the area was relatively clean. The ongoing effort by the Lake Gregory Company, walkers, kayakers and others has paid off.
Mary-Justine Lanyon, president of the Rotary Club of Crestline-Lake Gregory, found that windshield wiper as well as a dead bird. She reported that a young man running by her at the lake’s edge called out, “Thank you!” She also stopped to talk with a family; the man said he had graduated from Rim High but now lives down the hill. They are frequent visitors to the mountain and he pledged to carry a trash bag with him on future visits.
The next cleanup will be at the close of the season in October.
