With the good intention of giving a “Let’s Go Hiking” nod to Cedar Glen, this weekly columnist wrote about Hook Creek Road for the June 20 edition of the Alpine Mountaineer. My first preference would have been the access route to Splinters Cabin and trail to Aztec Falls. Unfortunately, but understandably, this hugely popular hike has been off-limits to the public since 2020 – at least by way of Cedar Glen. The U.S. Forest Service shut it down not only because of COVID-19, but also due to chronic overcrowding, trash and graffiti. That official closure could remain in effect for another year or more.
So why not write about my No. 2 choice? It seemed sensible to me, because this main Cedar Glen thoroughfare is pleasant and picturesque. What I failed to take into account is the community’s highly restricted parking and the oh, so serious impact visitors to Aztec Falls had on the neighborhood prior to 2020. It certainly explains why current residents are very protective of their property and surroundings.
Since last week, the Alpine Mountaineer has heard from many of those residents – by email and telephone. Some were disappointed by the column. Others were downright incensed. To all of them, I express my heartfelt apology for the distress I caused. It wasn’t my intention, of course, but it clearly was the result of the article I wrote.
Here’s the fine-grained issue. . . The parking spot I recommended at the end of Hook Creek Road, near the closed Forest Service gate, turns out to be private property. I was completely unaware of that. There’s no alternative space anywhere nearby.
So the bottom-line from “Let’s Go Hiking” is that there’s no good spot in this community – especially along Hook Creek Road – to lauch a walkabout adventure. Until the access to Aztec Falls finally reopens, please leave the road to its appropriately vigilant residents. When the Forest Service ultimately does open the gate, be a thoroughly thoughtful and courteous visitor to Cedar Glen.
Sincerely, Tim Wilcox ~ “Let’s Go Hiking”
