Dear Sidney,

Aug 21, 2024 | Dear Sidney

This morning was the first time I realized that, in fact, I am truly alone, that I have no one to reach out to, no one I can count on. I mean, really, I had to take the car into town for the 60k service at Snyder’s and I couldn’t get anyone to commit to taking me back home. So, I wasted a good three hours of my day wandering around the village waiting to get my car off the rack.

I also wasted 16 bucks on a huge plate of huevos rancheros, over easy, that I could have easily shared had I one friend to share it with, who would enjoy waiting with me for my car. Thank goodness I don’t contemplate a move any time soon, because there is no one who would give up an hour of precious time to help me pack a lousy lamp in exchange for 20 pounds of snow melt salt.

I thought Crestline was a super-duper huggy-feely friendly community chock-full of do-gooders. Ha! Not so. So, yeah, maybe I’ll be moving off the mountain, but I’ll have to borrow a truck and I don’t have any friends with trucks or really any friends at all, which sucks.

Do you have any uplifting advice for me before I start filling out rental applications for apartments down the hill that I can’t afford?

         Sadsack in Crestline

Dear Sadsack,

Sadly, the definition of sadsack from the Oxford dictionary is an “inept blundering  person.” You haven’t given me much to go on here, but you may simply be a self-centered oaf, a negative tidbit among the well-behaved citizenry.

In last week’s column was a desperate cry out for friendship, apparently in any form. I shall ask my editor to hook you two up.

Dear Sidney, I’ve been up and down this mountain since Grandpa bought a vacation cabin in Crestline circa 1954. From 39th and Arrowhead in San Bernardino, we’d all pile into the red and white boat of a Buick and head up the mountain from 40th Street. Not long of a...
