Community Thanksgiving dinner in need of help

Community gathering in rustic hall with people dining.

By Mary-Justine Lanyon

For the past several years, the Rotary Club of Crestline-Lake Gregory has organized the free community Thanksgiving dinner. The club could not have done this on their own.

The club is very grateful to the Lake Gregory Company for donating the use of the San Moritz Lodge for this outreach into the community.

Volunteers from other service clubs – the Crestline Lions, the Rotary Club of Lake Arrowhead and the Rotary Club of Lake Arrowhead Mountain Sunrise – stepped up and helped prepare and serve the food. Several churches in the community sent scores of volunteers to help, notably the men of the Lake Gregory Community Church who deep-fried turkeys behind the lodge.

The members of the Rotary Club of Crestline-Lake Gregory fear that the dinner is in jeopardy this year. Because their membership is at an all-time low, they don’t have the bodies needed to organize the dinner. New members are always welcome.

This free dinner is important to the community – not just for families who are unable to put a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on the table but also to those folks who find themselves alone on this holiday. Last year there was one diner who stayed the entire day, working on his Sudoku puzzles while folks visited with him. That diner needed that sense of community on that day.

The Rotary Club of Crestline-Lake Gregory is reaching out to the community to see who might be able to take over organizing this dinner. The club will, of course, share their expertise and help out. But they need help.

Is there a Thanksgiving angel out there? Contact Jeri-Lynn Miller, the club president, at lttlmissy@gmail.com or (909) 754-9742. The club meets at noon on Thursdays at the Top Town Café; let President Jeri-Lynn know if you would like to join us and learn more about Rotary.2023-1
