Caltrans has issued a notice to mountain motorists that the Burnt Mill maintenance crews will be conducting a crack seal operation on Highway 18 from Monday, Sept. 9 to Thursday, Sept. 12.

The second phase of the crack seal work will close Highway 18 from SR-138 to Upper Waterman Canyon Road.

The second phase of the crack seal work will close Highway 18 from SR-138 to Upper Waterman Canyon Road.

The work, which will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. will necessitate a full closure of the southbound (downbound) lanes from Upper Waterman Canyon Road to Old Waterman Canyon Road.

Caltrans suggests motorists use Highway 330 or 138 during that period.

However, the Alpine Mountaineer asked Public Information Officer Michael Martinez if motorists would be able to detour around the work by using Waterman Canyon. This was his response:

“Our work on SR-18 will start at Waterman Canyon; that will allow access to Old Waterman Canyon but Caltrans cannot advise people to use that road as a detour because that is not a California state-owned route.”

Additional crack seal work will take place on Highway 18 from Monday, Sept. 16 to Thursday, Sept. 19, also from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. This will require a full closure of the southbound (downbound) lanes of Highway 18 from SR-138 to Upper Waterman Canyon Road.

For this closure, Caltrans advises motorists use Highway 330.
