At the Sept. 3 meeting of the Crest Forest Municipal Advisory Council, representatives of various government agencies – the sheriff’s department, County Fire and CHP – addressed the audience and warned them to always be prepared in case of fire or other emergency situations.
Their advice was to have a bug-out bag ready with important papers and they passed out a paper with a list of what to gather and take with you in case of having a 15-minute warning to leave, a half hour warning, and what to additionally include if you have one or two hours of warning to evacuate.
It was just days later that this list was found to be very valuable when the Line Fire began and the county issued evacuation warnings for the Crestline and Lake Arrowhead area and mandatory evacuation orders for the Running Springs and Arrowbear area.
The special guest for the meeting was from the San Bernardino Community Development and Housing Department. They spoke on the proposed consolidated plan to build large-scale, low-income units in the county. They spoke about the block grants and funding they were seeking to receive federal money to accomplish this.
They handed out a survey, asking what housing barriers currently exist in the local community and county. This action plan is seeking community development block grants and others to develop a strategy to target federal money towards the areas with the greatest need. They spoke about creating and addressing affordable senior housing needs and ADA improvements to parks but said there would be no rental assistance in this program.
Following the presentation, they admitted there were no plans at this time to build any of this housing in the mountain communities.
No government officials were able to report by Zoom due to previous hacks of the meeting.
The Lake Gregory representatives were not in attendance, but Lewis Murray reported that the plans for the sanitation system for the future Switzerland campground was underway and the system may be done by next year.
The Lake Gregory dredging that was reported on in the Sept. 5 issue of the Alpine Mountaineer by Mike Harris was approved by the board of supervisors at their meeting. This dredging should benefit the health of the lake, all agreed, as detailed in that article.
The comments on the grand reopening of Goodwin and Son’s Market were all very positive and appreciated by the community.
The next meeting of the Crest Forest MAC will be held on Tuesday Oct. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the San Moritz Lodge at 24640 San Moritz Drive, on the eastern shore of Lake Gregory. The public is invited.
