Judy Zulfiqar – the governor of Rotary District 5330 for the 2024-2025 year – visited the three Rim Rotary clubs last week. She brought with her a message of ways the district is revolutionizing itself with the hope local clubs will follow suit.

She outlined five ways to accomplish this:

• Do something new. The district has installed electronic billboards and has created a human trafficking awareness trailer. “What can your club do new this year?” she asked.

• Embrace new club models. Zulfiqar pointed to the E-Club of World Peace, an online club with close to 100 members from around the world, and the possibility of creating satellite clubs.

• Achieve more by doing less. It sounds counterintuitive, she said, but the district can help local clubs do more.

• Look for and find allies everywhere. Work with other nonprofits, she urged the Rim clubs. And, Zulfiqar said, “we encourage districtwide club collaboration.

• Embrace new technology. She outlined the many ways the district is communicating with the local clubs: through a blog post, video messages, text messaging and a podcast.

Zulfiqar asked each of the clubs – Lake Arrowhead, Mountain Sunrise and Crestline-Lake Gregory – if they have a strategic plan. “We encourage every club to have a three-year rolling strategic plan,” she said, adding there is a team at the district level that can help each club develop one.

After listing some upcoming key dates, Zulfiqar awarded Inspiring Rotary Hero coins to Rotarians selected by their club presidents. Jay Rynda, president of the Lake Arrowhead club, chose Diane and Bob Gladwell; Elizabeth O’Neil, president of the Mountain Sunrise club, chose Corina Colan; and Jeri-Lynn Miller, president of the Crestline-Lake Gregory club, chose Angela Harrington and Mary-Justine Lanyon.

“Sometimes,” Zulfiqar concluded, “you don’t know where the impact will land.” She told the story of a young girl from Missouri who received a scholarship from her local Rotary club. Years later, that girl joined Rotary, became her club’s president, went on to lead a district committee and today is the current district governor.

“Go out into the world and do good,” she urged all her fellow Rotarians.
