Crest Forest Senior Citizens Club president and community motivator and mentor Penny Shubnell, who lived in Crestline for 28 years, passed away very suddenly on Friday evening, Oct. 18. Penny had spent the previous day interacting with friends while selling ice cream sundaes at one of her favorite fundraiser dinners, the annual “Stuff Your Spud” at Leisure Shores.
She was one of the most involved seniors on the mountain, leading the Crest Forest Seniors for decades, coordinating the senior nutritional luncheons. Penny directed the pivot to drive-through pick-up meals during Covid for social distancing purposes and she coordinated getting Covid shots brought to the mountain for those seniors who were unable to get down the mountain and stand for hours in line to receive the vaccinations.
Penny was recognized as a community leader by all, was on numerous committees, helped begin the original Crestline Connect weekly networking group, was elected to the Crestline Sanitation board and was appointed by the county supervisor to sit on the Municipal Advisory Council for the Crest Forest Communities. She also sat on numerous Department of Aging and advisory boards and spent years coordinating the community health fair and so much more. Penny had the unique distinction of being the only Crestline resident to be recognized as the Lake Arrowhead Citizen of the Year.
A celebration of Penny Shubnell’s life is being organized and will take place at the San Moritz Lodge on Nov. 8, time to be determined. Details on the celebration and tributes to Penny will be published in a future issue of this newspaper.
Those who wish to send sympathy cards to her children and family may send them in are of the Crest Forest Senior Citizens Club at P.O. Box 317, Crestline, CA 92325.
