Seniors turned out in their dancing shoes for the senior prom, sponsored by Rim Family Services on Monday, Oct. 7. The prom, held at the Twin Peaks Community Center, had the theme “All That Jazz” and was designed for those 60 and older. The free event had the tag line, “Bring a date or come stag.” Many of the seniors who attended already knew each other as they frequently have lunch together at the San Moritz Lodge.

There were all the fixings of a prom: a free photo booth with props and sayings with a sparkly back drop; a spread of sandwiches, cookies, veggies and munchies; a dance floor; and great music from the 50s through the 70s, spun by DJ Frank Pirolo. DJ Frank played music that got the seniors up out of their seats and onto the dance floor. Many were singing along with the popular songs of their youth, such as “Tequila,” with music from Abba to Elvis, too.

The dance floor was often filled with dancers during the afternoon prom which lasted from 2 to 5 p.m. Many of the ladies came in dresses with spangles and sparkles and several of the men came in suits or sports jackets.

Frank Elwell, 91, remembered the olden days of his previous proms and came wearing his penny loafer shoes to dance the afternoon away.

Jeanine Baquette, 92, said last year, when they had this prom at the Lake Gregory Education and Community Center gym, there were almost 100 people who attended; she wished there were more attending today. She said that this building set-up was nicer and had nicer tables, tasty food and much better sound. “The music was great,” she said, and she remembered all the songs from the 50s and 60s “and I know the words too!”

Kathy Taylor, 76, also attended. “This music sure gets everyone out of their seats and dancing. It even got my arthritic body moving today. This was so much fun!”
