As Emily Gregg Ozaeta, the music director at Mary Putnam Henck Intermediate School, welcomed the guests to the school’s fall concert, she encouraged parents and friends to return for their spring event.
As good as these students are now, she said, “you will see a whole different band in the spring!”
With that, the advanced band (1) opened the concert with “Excalibur” by James Swearingen. That was followed by “The Great Gate of Kiev” by Modest Mussorgsky and finally “Lexington March” by John Edmondson.

The choir members (2) then took their places on the risers to sing “Viento” in Spanish. “This is the perfect weather for this song,” Ozaeta said, referring to the stiff winds that were blowing on Oct. 18. After singing “See the Light” from Tangled, the choir was joined by percussionists from the advanced band on the African song “Kye Kye Kule.”

The stage was reset and made ready for the beginning band during a brief intermission. That band then took the audience on what Ozaeta called “a tour of our method book.” The first three songs were all composed of just three notes, followed by songs with four, five and then six notes.
And that, Ozaeta told the standing-room-only crowd, “was a tour of what we’ve learned so far this school year.
“I’m so proud of my students for all they’ve accomplished in the year, especially considering our impromptu break due to the fire,” Ozaeta said after the concert. “I can’t wait to see what else they’ll accomplish with the rest of the school year!”
