For 35 years Operation Provider has been distributing turkeys and all the fixings to folks who sign up with the Rimforest-based food bank.
Founder and Executive Director Holland Lowe posted on Facebook the day before the distribution that “I am delighted to announce that the turkeys have been safely transported up the mountain. [The distribution] will ensure a happy Thanksgiving for the 220 families who enrolled in the program.”
Because the weather was chilly and misty on Nov. 26, Lowe began the distribution a little earlier that the planned noon start time. As folks were checked in by volunteers, they received a box with vegetables, fruits, spaghetti, bread, juice, potatoes, rice, cashews and walnuts. They also received turkeys that weighed between 16 and 18 pounds. Volunteers carried the boxes and turkeys to the folks’ cars.
Firefighters from County Fire Station 94 arrived on their fire engine and helped carry the food to people’s cars.
“This achievement,” Lowe said, “serves as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when we work together to fight against hunger.
“I am very proud.”
Operation Provider is located at 26525 Pine Avenue in Rimforest. They distribute food on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 2:00 p.m. New clients will be asked to fill out some paperwork and show their photo ID. Visit www.operationprovider.org for more information.
The food bank will be closed until Dec. 10. Their next event will be the free holiday dinner on Christmas Day at the Elks Lodge.
