For the past several years, the Mountain Homeless Coalition has led the effort to count those who are homeless on the mountain as part of the national Point-in-Time count. This year’s count will take place on Jan. 23.
HUD (Housing and Urban Development) requires an annual count of people experiencing homelessness who are sheltered in emergency shelter, transitional housing and safe havens. A count is also required of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness.
Because grant funding is often dependent on the number of people experiencing homelessness, it is critical for the Mountain Homeless Coalition to achieve an accurate count.
An in-person training for the Point in Time count will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. at St. Richard’s Episcopal Church, 28708 Highway 18, Skyforest. The training will take one hour.
Volunteers may sign up at that training or on this link: https://sbchp.sbcounty.gov/community-projects/point-in-time-count.
The Point in Time count will start at 9 a.m. at St. Richard’s Church on Jan. 23. Volunteers will be out in the field from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In San Bernardino County, the Point in Time count is sponsored by the San Bernardino County Homeless Partnership in collaboration with the Office of Homeless Services and in consultation with the Institute for Urban Initiatives.
