Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott – Cookies

January and February are my favorite months of the year. Why? you ask. Thank you, I’m glad you asked. Well, it’s because Girl Scouts all over the fruited plain will begin selling their sweet, delicious Girl Scout cookies on Jan. 26. But you better hurry, because they will stop selling them on Feb.16.

Cookie starts with the letter C. Let’s think of other things that start with C. Oh, who cares about the other things? C is for cookie and that’s good enough for me. Oh, cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C. (“C is for Cookie” – The Cookie Monster from Sesame Street)

If there’s one thing I can’t resist, it’s the taste of those yummy Girl Scout cookies, especially the chocolate-mint variety. Just as I suspected, the Thin Mints are the best-selling variety, racking up roughly 55 percent of sales, nationwide. In second place are the Samoa Caramel Delights, which account for 19 percent of sales. Coming in at third place are the Peanut Butter Tagalongs at 11 percent, followed by the Peanut Butter Sandwich Do-si-dos at 2 percent and the Shortbread Trefoils at 4 percent and last, but not least, are the Lemonades, also at 2 percent.

Oh, sure, they’re overloaded with calories. Not to worry, though – I have a treadmill I can use to maintain my boyish figure. And besides, it’s for a great cause, since the profits derived from sales go toward all the wonderful projects and programs that help little girls grow up to be responsible, caring and productive adult citizens. So, next time you encounter one of these young ladies knock-knock-knocking at your door or at your grocery store hawking their cookies, don’t ignore them. Stop for a moment and pick up a box or two, or three, or twelve. And, if you’re concerned about your boyish or girlish figure, they make wonderful gifts for others.

Hey, you know what? A round cookie with a bite out of it also looks like a C, but it’s not as good as a cookie. Oh, and the moon sometimes looks like a C, but you can’t eat it, so C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me.

I’ve always been a big supporter of scouting, having been a Boy Scout, as well as a Sea Scout, while growing up in the OC. Also, both of my boys were in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and my oldest boy attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Here’s a little-known fact: Did you know that every American who has walked on the moon was once an Eagle Scout? And, no, my boy never walked on the moon, but there were times I wanted to send him there.

Here’s another little-known fact: Did you know I once had a torrid affair with my son’s Cub Scout Den Mother? Yep, as a matter of fact I did, and I’m not ashamed to admit it… it was my wife…Ha, ha, faked you out.

Oh, cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C, oh boy! Yum, yum, yum!

Keep it flyin’,
Uncle Mott
