The three Rotary Clubs in the Rim communities – Crestline-Lake Gregory, Lake Arrowhead and Mountain Sunrise – encourage high school students to enter their speech contests held early in February.
Speeches must be five to eight minutes long and based on Rotary International’s Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do:
- Is it the truth?
- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Any topic may be used to create the speech as long as it is not offensive or obscene. In the past students have applied the Test to the importance of being on a sports team, the impact of a parent’s cancer on the child’s life and how it feels to be adopted from another country.
Throughout the time period, the speaker must address the relevance or impact of the Four-Way Test questions to the speech theme. Details and judging criteria can be found at Rim High with Ms. Tennant in the Activities Director’s office or by emailing AWPopka@aol.com.
Contests are open to public school, charter school, home school and Rim Virtual Academy students but they must sign up with Ms. Tennant or through the email above by noon on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and select the contest where they will present: Feb. 4 at 12:15 p.m. for Rotary Club of Lake Arrowhead, Feb. 5 at 7 a.m. for Rotary Club of Lake Arrowhead Mountain Sunrise or Feb. 6 at noon for Crestline-Lake Gregory Rotary Club.
Rotarians look forward to hearing student speeches and offer cash awards to participants.
