The Rim Youth Theatre and Vento Dance Company are holding auditions for their newest show, Willy Wonka JR., which will be performed on May 9 and 10 and May 16 and 17. This exciting show for youth will have parts for those age 6 through 17 who want to act, sing or dance, or all three.

Auditions began on Jan. 28 and continue on Feb. 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Lake Arrowhead Community Presbyterian Church. Everyone who auditions will get a role that suits their skills level in the show. Although there is no preparation required and no experience required, kids should come ready to sing, dance or read some lines. They hope to cast all 25 roles.

After the kids are cast in the show, during the rehearsals there will be dancing, acting and singing lessons every Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m.  The vocal coach is Melissa Stevens, the acting coach is actress Tracy Ellert and the dance choreographer is Kelly Vento.

This fun and imaginative show will be a positive experience that can change a child’s self-image by giving them more confidence in themselves and help them excel in school and life, as they learn techniques on how to act and present themselves to others. The theater company provides the costumes and necessaries for the show. The acting, dance and singing lessons are $129 a month. “Sign up today and discover the magic of theater,” said Kelly Vento.

There are also jobs for parents to volunteer for, if they want to be involved, as the company will need a props manager, costumer, lights and sound directors and some stage crew helpers. Each of the previous Rim Youth Theatre shows, with the Vento Dance Company, has been very popular with the audiences and they have received excellent reviews.

The company’s most recent show was last December when they performed the original scripted play, ‘Twas the Night, combining choreography with the actors in the story.

Both the Vento Dance Company and the Rim Youth Theatre program are charter school approved for school credit.

Children’s theater is good for the community since youth who get involved in positive recreation tend to stay out of trouble, are more successful in school and begin to set goals for themselves and their lives as they see themselves in their own future of their making.

“This is a fun and supportive environment where beginners explore their creative side, while experienced performers can refine their skills,” added Vento.

Willy Wonka is the well-known story by Roald Dahl, where children from around the world search for a golden ticket in a Wonka candy bar; Finding the ticket would give them the opportunity to visit the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory, plus they would win a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate.
