The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has issued a warning to residents.
The sheriff’s department has become aware of scammers impersonating the department, calling residents to claim they missed a federal jury duty summons.
They may demand personal information through an app, including selfies and sensitive details, or insist on payment through Zelle, gift cards or Apple Pay. To sound convincing, they may even spoof the department’s real non-emergency phone number.
Remember, the sheriff’s department says, the sheriff’s department will never call you about jury duty, a missed summons or a warrant. They will never demand payment or personal information over the phone.
If you receive a call like this, the warning says, hang up immediately.
Stay alert, spread the word and protect yourself from scams.
