The Pinewood Derby is a fun Cub Scout racing event held in many Packs. During the event, Cub Scouts race small wooden cars down a sloped track. They are powered only by gravity.
The Cub Scouts and their families watched intently as the cars raced down the track.
The first Pinewood Derby race was organized and held in 1953 in Manhattan Beach, Calif. By 1954, word had spread and Boys’ Life magazine published Pinewood Derby plans in its October 1954 issue. Before long, Packs across the country made the Pinewood Derby part of their annual calendar.
On Sunday, Feb. 2, 20 boys from Cub Scout Pack 264 participated in their annual Pinewood Derby. For some racers, it was their first Derby; for others it was their fifth.
Each boy made his own car, with an adult’s help, from a universal kit that includes a wooden block, plastic wheels and metal axles.
Since the cars are accelerated by gravity, the best way to speed up a car is by maximizing its weight to make it as heavy as the Pack’s rules allow.
First place in pack 264’s Derby this year went to Logan Romero, second place to Bennett DeBruyn and third place to Bohdi Bakshi. Best in show car design went to Kai McKenzie and Bennett DeBruyn.
