The new Crestline bookstore, Paper & Clay, will be hosting a poetry reading for members of the community to enjoy on Sunday, Feb. 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The evening’s event will feature local poets reading some of their own favorite writings and works.

Customers at Paper & Clay are encouraged to sit in the comfy chairs while they peruse a book or two.

The poets contributing that evening will include well-known Crestline poet Candace Pearson, who has done numerous poetry writing and reading events over the years. Other invited poets who will be reciting their favorite poems that evening include Jeff Rogers, Mandy Hartz, Gina Duran and Page & Clay store owner and author Rachel Brown. All of these writers love using words that create visual images that evoke emotions though their poetry.

The featured poet of the evening is Micah Bournes, who will be reading his own special poetry, which should inspire all who attend. Bournes grew up listening to rhyming phrases and in college started writing his own music and words, giving spoken-word poetry his focus. He enjoys performing his poetry in front of audiences and will be reading poetry from his published books, including Here Comes This Dreamer. He describes himself as “a creative man of faith.” In addition to his performing poetry and music, “he speaks and teaches on creative writing, pursuing justice and the way of Jesus.”’

Paper & Clay offers a wide variety of titles.

This is a special opportunity for those who appreciate excellent poetry, because the oral presentation of poetry, especially by the poet themself, is especially impressive in the way the author’s voice massages the words. Bournes’ website, www.micahbournes.com, has numerous clips of him passionately reciting many of his favorite poems, some of which he will perform at Paper and Clay that night.

There will be refreshments, plus warm drinks since it is a winter evening’s presentation, including free hot coffee, tea, cider and hot chocolate.

This “Echoes on the Mountain” poetry night is but one of the many events the new bookstore has already hosted, including the children’s story time at 11 a.m. every Saturday, attracting numerous children and parent readers. They read picture books for half an hour. It’s best for ages 8 and under, but all ages are welcome. The children’s book room has a wide variety of titles and styles of books for children of all ages. Paper & Clay carries selections from baby books to preteen books, informational and non-fiction books of youth interest, plus scary stories and teen adventures and a good selection of young adult novels in many genres.

The bookstore carries a wide variety of books, on many topics, for all ages, especially in the horror and suspense topics and writers. The Stephen King title collection, for example, is extensive at Paper & Clay, which has unique toys, many connected to book titles, amazing natural jewelry, one-of-a-kind ceramics, created by Brown herself, plus gift cards for the shop.

The newest challenge in the bookstore is to “take a blind date with a book.” The reader chooses a gift-wrapped book and, if after reading it they don’t like it, they may bring it back for another book.

Every day, owner Rachel Brown offers her customers free hot coffee, tea, cider and hot chocolate to enjoy while sitting in her comfy chairs and checking out some of her varied selection of book titles.

Brown does gift wrapping of books, the beautiful jewelry and her clay creations as well. Paper & Clay is open from noon to 6:00 p.m. Thursday through Sunday at 23872 Lake Drive, across from Ace Hardware and the Stockade in Crestline.
