Rim High’s choir participated in the High Desert Festival at Silverado High School in Victorville on March 17.
The district’s transportation office was unable to provide buses for the choir members to get to the festival. The choir has a harder time fundraising as they are not as well known as the band. Thankfully, some of the parents stepped up to carpool, completing the required paperwork just in time.
The choir performed three pieces for two adjudicators: “Sing Gently” by Eric Whitacre; “Bist Du Bei Mir by Johann Sebastian Bach, arranged by Russell Robinson; and “Il Est Bel et Bon” by Pierre Passereau.
Our goal for these sorts of festivals is to gain practice in performance, experience constructive competition with other high schools and gain feedback from other expert musical directors. After our performance, we are able to hear their recorded criticism and written notes, so we are better able to improve our performances in the future.
The judges were impressed with our students’ performance. Out of the eight choir ensembles that performed, I would say that our choir stacked up very well with the others. We were only outshone by the “advanced ensembles” that have multiple choir periods in the day.
The judges were especially appreciative of our German and French pronunciation and were happy to see that foreign languages were not too scary for us, as they saw in the other choirs.
This leads to a huge shout out to Mrs. Delfolie! She assisted the choir in their French pronunciation, and we couldn’t have done it without her!
The choir received an Excellent rating for their performance. In terms of these sorts of competitions, an Excellent can be viewed as second place.
