Much like Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who together lured some 30,000 persons to a town hall rally against oligarchy in Denver, Colo., on March 21, about 55 like-minded mountain residents and members of the Mountain Bears Democratic Club attended a friendly social event on March 22 at a hilltop home, high above the north shore of Lake Arrowhead.

Guests enjoying dinner in one of several dining areas at Nancy Corbett’s home.

They enjoyed a potluck dinner at the home of Nancy Corbett while they mingled and exchanged ideas with friendly neighbors on how to fight back against what they perceive to be angry and aggressive attacks on the political system and protect what many fear is America’s fading democracy, under the country’s current leadership.

That same evening, major television networks were focused on similar neighborhood town hall rallies and protest demonstrations that have been taking place throughout the nation in recent weeks.

Upon arrival, invited guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, as well as a wide selection of snack foods and adult beverages at various locations throughout Corbett’s spacious living room. The potluck dinner featured an abundant assortment of salads, breads, fruits and vegetables, meatballs, pepperoni pizza and fried chicken, topped off with assorted cookies and homemade pies. When asked what inspired her to become involved in the Mountain Bears, Jacqueline Lauder told the Alpine Mountaineer, “When we retired and moved to the mountain, we were searching for other progressive neighbors. The first year we moved to Crestline and, when we witnessed a Black Lives Matter protest on Lake Drive, I got a feeling that this was going to be a safe community to live in. We had our first club meeting on Feb. 1, just after Trump was inaugurated.” When asked how long they have been residing in Lake Arrowhead, Ken Lauder said they bought their current home seven years ago and had been living there for five years.

Recently installed club President Holiday Heller poses with its mascot.

“We’ve been writing letters to the editor and sending out post cards to let people know that we will be protesting at Congressman Jay Obernolte’s office in Hesperia at 12 noon on April 5,” said new club president Holiday Heller. “We may do this again, monthly. Our goal is to get everyone involved in whatever they can do.”

Regarding the planned protest at Congressman Obernolte’s office at 9700 7th Street in Hesperia, Derek Marshall said, “We have formed a planning committee and if anyone would like to be on the planning committee for April 5, please just let me know.”

Mincing no words, another club member commented, “I am very happy to gather with like-minded people at a casual, social occasion without being challenged by rude and aggressive persons.”
