The Crestline Lions Club has been sponsoring a pull-tab contest at Valley of Enchantment Elementary School this past school year. The classrooms have actively been bringing the pull tabs from soda cans to their classrooms to be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The class that collected the most pull tabs was promised an ice cream party by the Lions Club.
The tabs were collected from the school on Tuesday, April 15 by Lions Catherine Johnson and Libby Hayes. Each classroom donated a bag of tabs, which needed a large cart to roll them out to the Lions’ cars. When the Lions collected all the pull tabs and weighed them, they found the Susk classroom had collected the most tabs, at 9 lb 0.5 oz, or approximately 13,500 tabs.
It is estimated by the Ronald McDonald House that each pound of tabs represents between 1,430 and 1,500 tabs. The students at VOE Elementary School collected 61 lb 7 oz of the pull tabs, which represents approximately 88,500 to 92,250 soda tabs.
The Ronald McDonald house offers free home-like housing to the families of seriously ill children in the hospital in Loma Linda. This enables the families to have a place to rest and relax so they can be supportive to their children when they visit.
The classes collected:
- #1 Susk – 9 lb 0.5 oz
- #2 McGilvery – 8 lb 6.3 oz
- #3 Snyder – 8 lb 1.3 oz
- #4 Warhol – 6 lb 7.6 oz
- #5 Mazakas – 6 lb 4.1 oz
- #6 Karn/Cairns – 4 lb 6.1 oz
- #7 Plemons – 3 lb 3.3 oz
- #8 Kirschner – 2 lb 9 oz
- #9 Schultz – 2 lb 4.9 oz
- #10 Rungo – 2 lb 2.8 oz
Other participating classes collected the following amounts of pull tabs: Burkitt – 2 lb 2.5 oz; Luna Potter – 1 lb 13.5 oz; Phillips – 10.5 oz; Gamboa – 0.9 oz; Endeman – 4.6 oz; Ballew – 15.0 oz; Hawley – 4.3 oz; Turner – 1.0 oz; Nicholson – 15.6 oz; McCook – 0.3 oz; Romero – 2.9 oz.
Some of the classrooms do recycling and removed the tabs from the cans they recycle for the school and donated these tabs for the Ronald McDonald House which is located next to the Loma Linda Children’s Hospital.
The Crestline Lions Club plans on giving the parties to the students this next week. Since three classrooms had large amounts, the highest classroom, Susk, will receive the ice cream party, and the second and third place classrooms, McGilvery and Snyder, will get Popsicles. The Lions Club members have been also collecting their own pull tabs this past year and will deliver all of them to the Ronald McDonald Home on official Pull Tab Collection Day in May.
