The staff at Heaps Peak Arboretum regretted that their much-anticipated native plant sale, scheduled for Saturday, April 26, had to be postponed until 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 3 due to the unexpected sudden snowstorm that arrived on Saturday morning after a beautiful week of blue-sky spring weather. This event was to kick-start their 40th anniversary month of activities.
Other free events at the arboretum on May 3 will include a 60 to 90-minute guided bird walk, scheduled for 8 a.m., as well as a two-hour class at 10 a.m. on edible and medicinal plants in the forest. On Sunday, May 4 a one-hour-long children’s nature-focused crafts event will be held for kids aged 4-11 at 2 p.m. Participants are asked to dress warmly for each scheduled event.
On May 10 at 10 a.m. there will be a one-hour-long guided nature walk in the forest with an emphasis on trees and plants. At 2 p.m. on the same date, there will be a 45-minute program on mountain composting.
For Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11, there will be a one-hour-long native plant identification and planting techniques program at 11a.m., followed by a one-hour nature-focused crafts program for children aged 4-11.
While all of these events are free, offered by the Rim of the World Interpretive Association, do be aware there is a U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass required for parking a vehicle in the arboretum parking lot.
On May 17th, the Arboretum folks have a very big day of activities, beginning at 8 a.m. with a guided bird walk lasting about 60 to 90 minutes. The big event of the month begins at 2 p.m. on May 17 with the Arboretum’s 40-year anniversary celebration with guest speakers telling the 40-year journey of the Arboretum. Afterwards, a nature scavenger hunt for all ages will take place.
