Magician performs escape trick in a decorated room.

The Spring Fling held at the Leisure Shores Senior Center in Crestline on Saturday, April 26, was an exciting and fun evening with entertainment, gaming, a magic show with Zac Swan with a grand finale of him escaping from a strait jacket, plus food and drinks.

One of the fun aspects was that most attended wearing clothes from their high school years, whenever that was, so there were 50s Greasers, those in poodle skirts, others wearing their letterman sweaters and lots of long-haired hippies. In addition, each attendee had a story of the reason behind their outfits. When asked, there were unknown sports stars, those who lettered in other areas and academics. Some of the hippies may have been unexpected as they became respected and successful titans of business; other hippies never lost their suspected pasts, as they still live the lifestyle.

The Derby Horse Racing game attracted a lot of attention and excited players, as did the other gaming opportunities that evening. The sound from the talent show was broadcast throughout the building, with the sound system working well. Magician Zac Swan was the emcee for the show. First prize was won by Eric, who told many really funny jokes, with good timing, and got many laughs. The singers were in tune and the show was fun.

The decor was imaginative and filled with music from records. The photo booth location had hanging record mobiles and put everyone in a retro mood.

The hot food was plentiful and delicious, consisting of burritos, with nacho chips, salsa, guacamole, pulled pork sandwiches, egg rolls, corn dogs and delicious meatballs, plus desserts and more. There was enough at the end of the evening that many took home the extra food for dinner the next day.

There were about 20 baskets for the raffles, which raised the funds to put on the event and support the senior lunch program and other programs offered by Leisure Shores. Dr. Paul, an active attendee of many local fundraisers, won three of the baskets, (he had, as always, purchased many raffle tickets) but gave the third one back immediately, so others could win. The excitement during the raffle drawing was intense, as the baskets were fabulous from many merchants in town. Many baskets had additional gift certificates so the winners could go into the stores and thank the merchants for being so generous.

The event was so well planned by Carrie Forebare and her committee that it was an easy event to attend and have fun. The next upcoming event, other than the dozens of weekly activities the senior center offers for those 50 and over, is a Mother’s Day Tea. Recent events at the senior center have included CPR training, bowling and yoga classes. Contact the senior center at (909) 338-5036 to RSVP for the tea or join in the many activities offered.
