Three thieves broke into the California Bank & Trust branch in Crestline in the early morning hours of April 9, attempting to gain entry to a bank ATM machine. They were foiled when alarms brought sheriff’s deputies to the scene.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Station in Twin Peaks, the break-in occurred shortly before 2:40 a.m. by the thieves cutting a hole in the bank’s roof, then entering the room near the front entrance where an ATM machine is located.
The thieves then attempted to tear the back off the machine where cash is kept, but were unable to penetrate the unit.
Alarms quickly brought sheriff’s deputies to the scene, where one of the three men was arrested, while the other two men made their get-away.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Whiteside told the Alpine Mountaineer that the three men were working as a crew from down the hill. Sheriff’s deputies are still looking for the two that got away.
A spokesperson for California Bank & Trust’s corporate headquarters in San Diego was contacted by this newspaper for a comment about the break-in, but had not responded by press time.
