The Game of Sk8 held on Saturday, June 7 at the Crestline skate park gave youngsters and teens an opportunity to hone their skateboarding skills but also emphasized the importance of honesty and good sportsmanship.
Seventeen youngsters aged 6 to 18 spent the afternoon swishing up and down ramps and rails, as well as wooden boxes, demonstrating their athletic prowess and skills in five different age categories.
In between rounds, participants were able to enjoy pizza, soft drinks and potato chips. Those who excelled were able to pick up trophies and skateboard-related prizes such as T-shirts, new skateboards and other skateboard-related products. When the game ended, trophies and plaques were given out, as well as skateboarding merchandise.
Saturday’s game was dedicated to the memory of 16-year-old Daunte Symonette, who passed away about three years ago after overdosing on fentanyl. At the end of the event Daunte’s mother, Regina Brown, with tears in her eyes, recalled the last time she saw Daunte alive.
“I found him on the floor of his bedroom passed out. After five days without breathing, he died from lack of oxygen. He didn’t think he was going to die. If someone offers you something, walk the other way. Just say no.”
