Crestline’s 47th annual Run Through the Pines 5k and 10k races around the 2.7-mile perimeter of Lake Gregory on Saturday, Aug. 8 has already lured some 500 or more men, women and children, according to Rim of the World Recreation and Park District General Manager Jenny Hueter.
Hueter told the Alpine Mountaineer that 450 avid runners from throughout Southern California had already pre-registered and she was expecting at least 50 or more late registrants by the 8 a.m. race time.
Having been launched in 1979, Run Through the Pines is one of the longest running events of its kind in Southern California. Both runners and walkers can enjoy a semi-paved course at a 4,720-foot elevation, which makes it an inviting run for physically fit locals and a bit of a challenge for down-the-hill folks.
Following the 8 a.m. Pledge of Allegiance and a rendition of the national anthem, the 10k runners will rush through the starting gate to begin the first of two consecutive runs along the scenic, tree-lined trail around Lake Gregory. They will be followed at 8:30 a.m. by the 5k runners.
Capturing first-place honors in the 10k competition in 2025 was Anaheim resident Victor Cortez, who previously resided in Crestline for four years, while second place honors went to Chino Hills resident Daniel Arteaga. A number of mountain residents placed in the Top 20.
Crestline’s own Gigi Bannister, who is a Rim of the World Recreation and Park District board member, hasn’t missed a Run Through the Pines, since its inception in 1979.

Race day staging will be in the meadow area near the Lake Gregory Co. bait and tackle shop. Age divisions range from 10 and under to 80 plus in five-year age spans; trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age division.
