Mountain communities unite to address housing crisis

Jun 19, 2025 | Mountain Events

The Mountain Homeless Coalition is hosting a Housing and Homeless Summit on Friday, June 27, bringing together mountain residents, vacation homeowners, businesses, churches and nonprofits to address one of our region’s most pressing challenges.

The event, taking place at Lake Arrowhead Community Presbyterian Church with simultaneous online access, aims to move beyond identifying problems to implementing real solutions for preventing and resolving homelessness in the San Bernardino Mountains.

“This summit is about harnessing the collective wisdom and resources of our mountain communities,” said MHC president Sue Walker. “We’re not just talking about the issue – we’re creating actionable plans that leverage the unique strengths of our residents, businesses and organizations.”

The summit targets a diverse audience including year-round residents, vacation property owners, construction and real estate professionals, faith communities and nonprofit organizations. Organizers recognize that effective solutions require collaboration across all sectors of the mountain community and beyond.

Attendees will hear from local, county and statewide experts about the current state of housing and homelessness in the region, explore successful strategies from similar communities and discover specific ways they can contribute to solutions. The program emphasizes practical approaches that match available resources with community needs.

Construction professionals and real estate industry members are particularly encouraged to attend, as housing development and innovative shelter solutions are key components of addressing the crisis. Local businesses will learn about workforce housing initiatives and how stable housing supports economic development.

The event begins with a light lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by the main program at noon. Pre-registration is highly encouraged at www.mountainhomelesscoalition.com/summit, especially for those planning to attend in person. However, even last-minute participants can join online via Zoom at www.mountainhomelesscoalition.com/summitzoom.

“Our mountain communities have always been places where neighbors help neighbors,” noted Walker. “This summit channels that spirit into organized action that can make a real difference.”

The Mountain Homeless Coalition works collaboratively with other organizations and motivated individuals throughout the San Bernardino Mountains to prevent and resolve homelessness through community-based solutions.
