A scaled-down version of this year’s Antique & Classic Wooden Boat and Woodie Car Show at Lake Arrowhead Village on June 7 was made necessary due to a large-scale construction project at the Village. The car show – which usually takes place lakeside – was moved to a parking area adjacent to the Bank of America. However, this didn’t discourage woodie owners from sharing fond memories of the past with one another. Boats, as usual, were lined up at the Arrowhead Lake Association docks.

Tom and Paula Parsons with their 1949 Dodge half-ton truck.

Tom and Paula Parsons brought their half-ton, 1949 Dodge woodie truck that he had found in San Clemente over 30 years ago. “I completely rebuilt the 5.7 V-8 engine. It was the first year of the Dodge Hemi engine,” Tom proudly said, adding that his classic Dodge had won Best of Show honors last year.

Awards in 15 categories were presented to owners of the boats on display during the Antique & Classic Boat Society’s So. Cal chapter’s awards dinner on Saturday evening at ALA’s Burnt Mill Beach Club. Garnering Best of Show was Cracker Jack, a 1940 Garwood Custom, owned by Bill Davidson, which also won the Best Engine trophy.

The People’s Choice Award, in which over 250 people voted, was won by Whispering Wood, a 1990 Chris Craft Model 103 owned by Richard Allen, who came from San Diego and also won for farthest distance traveled. Voting was tights, with Whispering Wood garnering only two votes over the second-place runner-up.

Best Outboard Engine and Outboard Boat awards were both won by Alex Kleckner with his 1961Glastron Fire Flite with a Mercury 100 Phantom engine. The big winner of the show was Rudy Pock’s Tiger Lily, a 21-foot, 1956 Chris Craft Continental, which captured three awards, including Best Chris Craft, Ladies Choice and Best 1958 and older.

Many said the dinner proved that owning an antique boat is a true family adventure, as whole families attended, ranging in age from 11 months old to teens and one owner who had attended the first Lake Arrowhead boat parade and show in 1985.
