As the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra prepares for its annual concert under the stars to celebrate Independence Day, they are hoping to set two new records.
Last year, the orchestra put out the call for piccolo players to come and play during “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Those musicians answered the call, with 192 from all over California participating.
The orchestra is challenging piccolo players to once again answer the call and beat last year’s record.
They also seek to welcome more veterans than ever to the football field at San Bernardino Valley College to be recognized and enjoy the concert. To that end, the orchestra invites folks to sponsor a veteran by purchasing an extra ticket or two.
The symphony has been honored to welcome thousands of service members to concerts through a longtime partnership with VetTix, which coordinates donated tickets to vetted members of all branches of currently serving military and veterans, as well as immediate family of troops killed in action.
“We look forward to welcoming our military veterans to join us,” said Chancellor Diana Z. Rodriguez. “Their service and dedication inspire us and we are honored to celebrate Independence Day alongside them.”
During this year’s concert – with the orchestra under the direction of Maestro Anthony Parnther – they will play a variety of favorite music from the 80s as well as traditional patriotic fare. The concert will culminate with the playing of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” performed to a fantastic fireworks display.
The concert will take place on Saturday, July 5 at 7:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy Summer Fest and its variety of food trucks, vendors, kids activities and a Ferris wheel.

Tickets for assigned table seating are available at $20 to $100 per person. General admission lawn seats are $10 per person with children under 12 always free. General admission ticketholders are encouraged to bring low lawn chairs or blankets. All attendees may bring their own picnic baskets or visit some of the many food trucks that will be on campus as part of Summer Fest.
San Bernardino Valley College is located at 701 S. Mt. Vernon Avenue in San Bernardino. Free, lighted parking is available in assigned lots throughout the campus on concert day.
