Come try your hand at emergency communications

Smiling volunteers at outdoor event with equipment.

Every year on the third full weekend in June, amateur radio operators throughout the U.S. participate in an event called Field Day. The purposes of this event are to practice setting up communications in the field and to offer the community an opportunity to visit and learn more about amateur radio.

This year, once again, the Mountain Top Amateur Radio Association (MTARA) will hold their Field Day at the Lake Arrowhead Community Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to this free event and we encourage families to attend as well as any youth groups.

There will be two radio stations set up and everyone is welcome to try make a contact with another station in North America or other countries. You will be working alongside one of our licensed radio operators.

In addition to the radio stations, there will be seven special educational presentations and demonstrations put on by club members. These presentations will showcase emergency radio equipment like was used during Snowmageddon. Guests will be able to try their hand at Morse Code, make simple electronic circuits using snap circuits, learn how to throw a wire antenna over a tree branch, learn about solar and battery power and radio operations at a mountain summit or a park. A special project will be to make a simple antenna and see how far it will transmit.

MTARA, with over 150 members, invites you to visit the event. Learn more about how these club members provide emergency communications as part of Mountain CERT teams, the county Office of Emergency Services and the Amateur Radio Emergency Services. They provide communications during extreme weather conditions, report fires and accidents and provide safety communications for special events like the Fourth of July fireworks, Tour de Big Bear, Gran Fondo and many other events.
