Caltrans crews have been working tirelessly to repair damage to Highway 138 caused by the recent Lake Fire. Guardrails, signs, drainage systems and slopes are all in need of repair.
The crews are working on removing and replacing 4,000 feet of damaged guardrail, signage and asphalt in preparation for the safe reopening of the highway.
To expedite the reopening process, Highway 138 has remained fully closed between Old Mill Road and Highway 173.
Crews anticipate addressing all safety concerns by July 28, which would allow for the reopening of the highway under one-way flagging control. This target date is dependent on the effects of potential monsoonal flow, which could impact the burn scar area on Highway 138.
Motorists traveling to the mountain communities during the closure should plan to use Highway 18 – keeping in mind that rock scaling has been taking place in the Narrows, leading to their hard closure – or Highway 330 from Highland.
Motorists should adhere to all road closure signage to ensure the safe transport of equipment and crews. Be advised that weather and/or other factors may affect the construction schedule.
