At last spring’s American Music Awards presentation on May 26, Billie Eilish dominated the night by winning in all seven categories in which she was nominated, including Artist of the Year, Favorite Female R&B Artist and Favorite R&B Song.

But do I care? Heck no, and don’t go telling a certain extended family member who has traveled far and wide, just to see Billie in concert and who has all the latest Billie Eilish-inspired products such as the ever-popular stainless steel pendant, the When We All Fall Asleep T-Shirt, Mini Bundle Eau de Toillette Fragrance Coffret, Amazing Grace Firming Body Emulsion and Coach Dreams Eau de Parfum-Ultra Beauty, all available at Target.

I suppose this is all well and good, if it makes her happy. But, as for me, I tend to march to the beat of a different drum. As for my own musical preferences, I was weaned on Paul Anka and Frankie Avalon and cut my teeth (Can one really do that, wouldn’t it hurt? Never mind, it’s just an expression) on Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills & Nash, John Stewart and the Grateful Dead.

Nowadays, however, I enjoy listening to Poco, a country-rock band that is a spin-off from Buffalo Springfield, featuring several original Springfield bandmates such as Richie Furay, Jim Messina and Timothy B. Schmidt (who now plays bass for the Eagles). Together, they have a rich harmony that is enhanced by the pedal steel guitar of now-deceased Rusty Young, all of which is a far cry from today’s contemporary country music that you might hear on a certain local radio station whose logo is a frog.

I never cared much for country music in the past, but I find that I’m listening more and more to many of yesterday’s Grand Ole Opry artists such as Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash and Buck Owens. As for today’s artists I prefer Lainey Wilson, Miranda Lambert, Alan Jackson, Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood. I reckon my favorite is George Strait.

Amarillo by mornin’ up from San Antone. Everything that I got is just what I’ve got on. When the sun is high in that Texas sky I’ll be buckin’ at the county fair. Amarillo by mornin’, I’ll be there. (Amarillo By Mornin’ – George Strait – 1982)

Keep it flyin’,

Uncle Mott

Have you noticed how cheap gasoline is, of late? Perhaps I will re-word that one. Gas isn’t exactly cheap. (That’s right, but I am, cheap that is). I must say, six or seven bucks a gallon surely ain’t cheap. However, I’ve seen at least one gas station in Crestline...

I find it annoying when TV networks advertise products I’m not interested in, such as to lower your life insurance costs. Like this dude named Johnathan who advertises every 10 minutes promoting life insurance for only $9.95 a month. A man says, “I’m over 50, what’s...

Last Saturday’s July 4th fireworks extravaganza in the sky, above Lake Gregory, marked the 57th anniversary of the first manned moon landing. I remember it like it was yesterday. Ground control to Major Tom. Commencing countdown, engines on. Check ignition and may...
