Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: The Dog Days of Summer

Labor Day weekend heralds the end of summer, even though it doesn’t officially end until the Sept. 22 autumnal equinox. But, for all practical purposes, summer as we know it here on the mountain is over and done.

Yes, the so-called “Dog Days of Summer” are now upon us…Who let the dogs out? Woof, woof, woof, woof (“Who Let The Dogs Out” – The Baja Men – 2000). Gone are the hordes of lost tourists and gone are the garage sales…Haven’t they sold that garage, yet? Also gone are the bikini-clad beach babes. Can’t say I’ll miss ‘em, except for the…well, you know what.

Back in the day…Sorry, I can’t remember exactly what day it was, summer was all about me and the boys in the hood riding our bicycles down to Corona del Mar to body surf, ‘cuz I couldn’t afford a real surf board, not to mention I nearly drowned the first time I tried surfin’ at Trestles…Okay, so they called me a gremmie.

Let’s go surfin’ now, everybody’s learnin’ how, come on and safari with me. Early in the mornin’ we’ll be startin’ out, some honeys will be comin’ along. We’re loadin’ up our Woody with our boards inside and headin’ out singin’ our song. (“Surfin’ Safari” – Beach Boys – 1962)

Nowadays I avoid going anywhere on holiday weekends, because everywhere you go it’s overcrowded, everything is overpriced – especially gasoline – and the bumper-to-bumper drive home when the party’s over is horrendous. This year, the only place I plan to go is the Lake Gregory Company’s Burgers & Brew event, which is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Aug. 31, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. See ya there…hic.

It’s too bad summer is over already, but you know what they always say: They say that all good things must end someday, autumn leaves must fall. But don’t you know that it hurts me so to say goodbye to you. Wish you didn’t have to go, no, no, no, no, and when the rain beats against my windowpane, I’ll think of summer days again and dream of you. (“A Summer Song” – Chad & Jeremy – 1964)

Keep it flyin’,
Uncle Mott
