Cellist Sergey Antonov

The soloist for Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello & Orchestra (Op. 33) is Sergey Antonov, who won the gold medal in the 2007 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

He started playing the cello at the age of 5 with his mother, Maria Zhuravleva, as his teacher. Since winning the competition, Antonov has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia and North and South America.

Antonov has collaborated with a number of other musicians. He and his piano partner Ilya Kazantsev have recorded several CDs of traditional cello-piano repertoire as well as their own transcriptions.

He currently lives in New York with his wife and son.

Maestro Golka is well known to mountain audiences. A violinist as well as a conductor and composer, he has appeared as a guest conductor with symphony orchestras across the U.S., in Europe, South America and Mexico.

Born in Warsaw, Poland, Maestro Golka and his family emigrated first to Mexico and then to the U.S. He holds degrees in violin performance and has a certificate in film scoring.

In addition to the Tchaikovsky, the program will include “On the Town: Three Dance Episodes” by Leonard Bernstein; “Lithuanian Rhapsody” by Mieczyslaw Karlowicz; “Slavonic Dance in C major” by Antonin Dvorak; “Slavonic Dance in E minor” by Antonin Dvorak; and the main title from Star Wars by John Williams.

The Arrowhead Arts Symphony will include the three string teachers who teach the mountain’s young people: Linda Wilson, Sharon Rizzo and Mui-Yee Chu.

Guests at the concert will hear the results of their teaching as the Mountain Top Strings will open the concert.

While the concert is free, donations to the Arrowhead Arts Association will be welcome.
