Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Act Naturally

Last week’s Emmy Awards presentation was a sad state of affairs. Give me a break…no, give me a piece of that Kit Kat bar. They’ve gotta be kidding, Seth Rogen? (Gag me with a spoon.) This foul-mouthed fool should be locked in a cage. Newton Minow – former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission – was right when he declared American television programing a “vast wasteland.”

I rarely watch television anymore but, when I do, it’s something worthwhile, like CNN, Jeopardy or Big Bang Theory. I have to admit that I’d vote for Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory and the narrator of the Young Sheldon series). Not only is Jim’s character brilliant, he’s also incredibly funny. Although Parsons has won numerous awards in the past, it’s too bad he didn’t even get nominated this time.

Kudos go to 15-year-old Owen Cooper, a British actor who became the youngest actor to win an Emmy for supporting actor in a limited or anthology series category for his debut role portraying a teenaged murder suspect in the Netflix mini-series Adolescence. Way to go, Owen!

Last month’s MTV Music Video Awards was entertaining, and Ariana Grande’s Video of the Year Award was well deserved, as was Sabrina Carpenter’s. And then there was Doja Cat…what a dumb name. My cat, Albert, was so embarrassed he just buried his head in the sandbox. However, I must say Ms. Cat certainly has smooth skin, as does Ms. Sabrina. You’ll know it’s them when you see them dancing down the street, skipping, laughing and singing. You may also see them riding on the gondola from Palm Springs to the top of Mt. San Jacinto. Unfortunately, no one’s gonna make a big star out of them.

They’re gonna put me in the movies, they’re gonna make a big star out of me. We’ll make a film about a man that’s sad and lonely, and all I gotta do is act naturally. Well, I’ll bet you I’ma gonna be a big star, might win an Oscar, you can’t never tell. The movie’s gonna make me a big star cause I can play the part so well. (“Act Naturally – The Beatles, featuring Ringo Starr – 1965)

Keep it flyin’,

Have you noticed how cheap gasoline is, of late? Perhaps I will re-word that one. Gas isn’t exactly cheap. (That’s right, but I am, cheap that is). I must say, six or seven bucks a gallon surely ain’t cheap. However, I’ve seen at least one gas station in Crestline...

I find it annoying when TV networks advertise products I’m not interested in, such as to lower your life insurance costs. Like this dude named Johnathan who advertises every 10 minutes promoting life insurance for only $9.95 a month. A man says, “I’m over 50, what’s...

Last Saturday’s July 4th fireworks extravaganza in the sky, above Lake Gregory, marked the 57th anniversary of the first manned moon landing. I remember it like it was yesterday. Ground control to Major Tom. Commencing countdown, engines on. Check ignition and may...
