Unleashing the power of Rotary

One of the highlights of the year for any Rotary Club is the visit by the sitting district governor. Governor Nyron McLean visited the three Rim-area clubs recently.

At the Rotary Club of Lake Arrowhead on Sept. 9, District Governor Nyron McLean installed the club’s newest member, Kristen Countryman (1). He also gave an inspirational presentation about becoming a Rotarian and how to keep members of your club.

At the Sept. 10 meeting of the Rotary Club of Crestline-Lake Gregory, DG Nyron discussed growing the club, offering his sage advice. Following the meeting, club members and guest Armand LeSage and Assistant District Governor Michelle French enjoyed dinner together at the Crestline Café (2).

DG Nyron’s final visit was to the Rotary Club of Lake Arrowhead Mountain Sunrise on Oct. 1. He talked about the power of the concept of Rotary. “In 1985,” he said, “someone said we need to do something about polio.” That something started with a local project in the Philippines.

“Because a Rotarian said we can do something, the cases of polio went from 365,000 a year to just 40 last year. Just think of that – that is the power of our organization.

“Rotarians are the angels of mercy, justice and peace. You have been selected to be a Rotarian and change the arc of this community, this universe,” DG Nyron said.

He talked about growing your club. “As wonderful as you are, you can’t be the only wonderful people on this mountain.”

But once someone joins the club, how do you keep them? He told the story of a woman who used to be a Rotarian. “Why used to be?” he asked. “She had a health issue, was away from meetings for a couple of weeks, months – and no one called her.”

DG Nyron had a different experience. At his father-in-law’s wake, he was surprised to see members of his club – the Rotary Club of Riverside Sunrise. He asked what they were doing there. “We are part of your family,” was the answer.

He ended with the slogan for his year as governor: “Unleash the power of Rotary – unleash the power of you.”
