January is the perfect time for chili. Start the year off right by getting together with friends and attending Leisure Shores’s annual chili cook-off at the Crest Forest Senior Citizens membership meeting at their clubhouse, on the eastern shore of Lake Gregory on Friday, Jan. 23 at 11:30 a.m., just in time for lunch.

In the past they’ve had many competing tastes of chili created by their members from vegetarian to heavily meat chilis and many versions of both. To enter the competition, just notify Tamara in advance at (909) 338-5036 to allow her time to set up a name tag, a name for the chili and a station for each competitor’s chili.

The other members who attend this luncheon are invited to make it a potluck style meal with a variety of cornbread, toppings such as onions, grated cheeses, sour cream or maybe bring a tasty dessert to complement the chili. The club will supply the coffee, other refreshments and paper goods.

These monthly luncheons at Leisure Shores are an excellent opportunity for the members of the club to socialize, meeting new friends and having a great meal while learning about what else is occurring in town. To become a member of the Crest Forest Senior Citizens Club is very easy; all a person needs to be is age 50 and the cost is only $20 for an entire year.

This membership includes the opportunity to be involved in a variety of lessons; by being involved, the members receive a year-long parking tag with a value of $50 for the Leisure Shores parking lot at Lake Gregory County Regional Park. The club has about 500 members now, who are involved in numerous activities of their choice each month both at Leisure Shores, the twice weekly luncheons at the San Moritz Lodge and activities in the community.

Dominoes is a popular activity at the Crest Forest Senior Citizens Club.

Those who have been a member for a year or longer and turn 80 years old get free memberships for the rest of their life.  There are many active members who have reached this milestone.

During this luncheon there will be door prize drawings sponsored by Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe in Top Town, coordinated by Marci Collar and, of course, a 50/50 for those who want the opportunity to win bigger.

Every month the club itself offers over 60 activities to appeal to the variety of interests of its members. This month it has 63 activities listed and often adds more during the month, as new leaders want to offer additional classes or activities. The Leisure Shores calendar of events is issued on the first of each month. It includes bowling days, yoga, Tai Chi classes, game days, art lessons, walking the lake together, Philosophy Club, various discussion groups, Mountain Music Makers, Oldies but Goodies and much more.

They also offer numerous card and board games, such as dominoes, bunco, poker, plus classes in beginning Spanish. There are several sewing groups such as the Quilts of Valor class, who make quilts for local veterans, and the community sew group. The calendar is always posted on the CFSCC Facebook page.

This chili cook-off membership luncheon promises to be filled with good food, a warm place to be for a few hours with friends and fun. If you are 50 or older but not yet a member, come join this free luncheon event and meet the wonderful, friendly people who are involved and see if it is a good fit for you, too. See their Crest Forest Seniors Facebook page or call Tamara at (909) 338-5038 for additional information.
