Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: The River

Jan 29, 2026 | Uncle Mott

Well, January has come and gone… Good riddance, too much precipitation, if you ask me, which you probably didn’t. A few years ago (2023), we had “Snowmageddon” and I got a T-shirt that said, “I survived Snowmageddon.” I feel like I deserve a new T-shirt that says, “I survived the Atmospheric River.”

Better get ahold of Sara Green, who operates the Wears the Mountain clothing concession at Crestline’s Friday Market Night and other public events. Sara’s clothing can also be found at Goodwin’s Market, across from the cashier’s check-out area, on your way out the door. By the way, I didn’t get paid to say that. But, who knows, maybe I’ll get a free T-shirt.

There is something that I can’t explain, like the rhythm of a moving train, like the river and the pouring rain, we are one. So I sing to the river, as I cling to the river, as I bring you the river running free. (“The River” – John Stewart – 1992)

Soon it will be February, which means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Last year, I got the Missus a box of See’s dark chocolate candy. Never mind that she’s allergic to chocolate, but I’m not. Pssst, don’t tell her I said that.

February also brings us the annual Mardi Gras Corks & Hops event, scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2026, once again at the magnificent San Moritz Lodge. According to Dr. Sturgeon and Professor Proton, red wine and dark chocolate are supposed to be heart healthy. As a matter of fact, they both contain antioxidants that may improve blood flow, lower bad (LDL) cholesterol and reduce inflammation.

There is something in the sound of drums, in the rhythm as the river runs, tells me you’re the only one for me, so  I sing to the river, as I cling to the river, as I bring you the river running free.

Keep it flyin’,

Uncle Mott
