Last month, 48 students from my Medical Core, Emergency Medical Response and Fire Technology classes went to watch the recruits from San Bernardino County Fire’s Tower 20 on one of their Fire Control 3 training days at the training center at the San Bernardino Airport. We had the opportunity to observe multiple drills simulating a three- to four-alarm fire.

The class of 64 recruits as well as 30+ instructors were involved in the complex coordination of initial fire attack, searching for a known victim in a multi-story structure that is on fire and setting up rapid intervention crews. They observed fire behavior, set up extinguishing tactics, read smoke patterns and ventilation. They also reviewed proper placing of fire service ladders, forcible entry, hose streams, victim retrieval, infant CPR, use of the AutoPulse, and fire service personnel operations.
My students got to see just a few of the tasks that firefighters are trained to do and the incredible teamwork that is involved in the proper management of an emergency.
Our tour was hosted by Captain Scott Leidner, my brother, and many of my close friends who are a part of the training cadre at San Bernardino County Fire. This created a very special and comfortable environment for my students as they were able to experience the camaraderie of this occupation.

- Captain Omar Aguilar, mountain resident who was in Rim Fire Technology classes in 2002.
- Will Carlson, mountain resident who was in Rim Fire Technology classes in 2003.
- Recruit Tristan Penny, mountain resident and a student of mine, who graduated in 2022.
- Recruit Charlie Uhrmann, mountain resident and a student of mine, who graduated in 2023.
It was very special to have two of my former students hired as firefighters and to see them in action. And it was special for my students see all of the opportunities available to them.
