The Rim of the World High School choir performed at the High Desert Festival at Silverado High School in Victorville on March 17.
The choir received an Excellent rating in their performance, the equivalent of second place. They performed two pieces for two adjudicators: “Connected” by Brian Tate and “Ad Astra” by Jacob Naverud.
“Our goal for these sorts of festivals is to gain practice in performance, constructive competition with other high schools and gain feedback from other expert musical directors,” said Kari Stebbing, the school’s music director. “After our performance, we are able to hear their recorded criticism and written notes, so that we are better able to improve our performances in the future.
“The judges were impressed with our students’ performance,” Stebbing added. “Out of the eight choir ensembles that performed, our choir stacked up very well with the others and was only outshone by the ‘advanced ensembles’ that have multiple choir periods in the day. Our choir is going up against large 2,000+ populace schools that have three to five choir periods throughout the day, and they are doing a fantastic job!”
Stebbing also noted that “the judges were especially appreciative of our unity, our stage poise and presence, and our professional conduct. They were also specially impressed by our student accompanist, sophomore Hannah Tallman.” The other choirs, she said, performed with a professional adult pianist.
“Hannah played the hardest song out of any of them and she did it exceedingly well,” Stebbing said.
“A final shout-out to the Lamperts family for helping us. Their presence and support is always highly valued,” Stebbing added.
The choir will participate in a festival at Fullerton College on April 25. The community is invited to their spring concert at Rim High on May 15.
