Members of Rim Special Athletes (RSA) are busy with a variety of indoor and snow activities during the winter. This month RSA hosted a day of bowling with a pizza party at Rim Lanes in Crestline.
Rim Special Athletes offers individual athletic activities for those with developmental disabilities and their families who live in the mountain area. They organize days of activities all year long, reflecting the season. Fun is the focus of these sporting activities as the “kids” of RSA range in age from 7 to older adults, plus their families may get involved in these activities. This was especially true of the day of the bowling as whole families participated.
Rim Lanes provided lightweight bowling balls so all could roll the balls down the lanes. The bumpers were put up so no gutter balls were seen and the automatic score board kept score so everyone saw the number of pins knocked down. Several strikes and spares were recorded.

Noah and his family were one of the families bowling with RSA at Rim Lanes.
For the younger children who could not pick up the balls, ball stands were provided so all they had to do was push the ball off the rack and watch it roll down the lane. Watching the pins fall down was exciting for young and old and parents, too.
Rim Lanes in Crestline is a special place. They are one of few bowling centers where there still are true wooden lanes; many of the more modern facilities have composite wood lanes, on which the balls roll differently. For the active bowler there is a difference. Bowlers from all over Southern California come up to Rim Lanes to bowl on real wood lanes.
RSA is always seeking new members and this event was another excellent opportunity for those considering joining RSA to meet the current members and decide if they want to join the group and be involved in the many other activities for the rest of the seasons this year. Sporting activities offered by Rim Special Athletes are always free to all participants. Upcoming events include a day at SkyPark; the summer lake program at Lake Arrowhead will begin after the water gets warmer. They will also ride in the annual Jamboree Days parade this year with the theme “Purple Mountains Majesty,” celebrating America’s 250th birthday on July 4.
Due to a lack of snow this winter, they didn’t get to have their day of sledding at Snow Valley or snowshoeing at Rim Nordic.
Rim Special Athletes is a program designed to give children and adults who have special needs an opportunity to engage in individual sporting activities where they can excel and feel good about themselves while having fun. Visit their website, www.rimspecialathletes.com, for details on their activities and how to get your special child involved in this free program, provided by volunteers and financed by donations by sponsors and local nonprofits.
