Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott – Little Red Rooster

Apr 2, 2026 | Uncle Mott

They say “April showers bring May flowers,” and we’ve already seen the daffydils bloom early this year. The tulips have come up profusely now too. But I fear this week’s light showers probably will make those dern weeds I’ve already spent a week whacking grow high again. I guess being the early bird this year wasn’t so advantageous.

Easter is here, and I hope the bunny will be generous to you and yours. Around here, we have a plethora of eggs, and they are delicious, and healthy too, … so says the California Egg Council in their TV ads. I know many families raise chickens and they lay eggs, but those roosters… !!! Did you know you should have an acre to legally own a rooster? But their crowing all day long… it seems I must live closer to them than an acre, or does their crowing just cut through the air? I guess a rooster does rule the roost, but I am not as pleased by roosters as some are, I guess.

I am the little red rooster, Too lazy to crow for day, Keeping everything in the farm yard upset in every way. (“Little Red Rooster,” recorded by the Rolling Sones in 1964, written by blues legend Willie Dixon)

I had a great time at the Keller Williams red ribbon cutting ceremony this week, opening their Crestline office. I wonder if more businesses had wine and tequila at their ribbon cuttings if they also would have such a large crowd? BTW, the music was a great addition too, in fact. Especially in Crestline, live music always attracts a great crowd. It is interesting these days with the internet and musicians, they can look up a song instantly such as “Rocky Racoon” or “Daydream Believer” and play it upon request. Or, even “Little Red Rooster.”  This is something that almost seems like magic to me!

The dogs begin to bark and hounds begin to howl, when the little red rooster is on the prowl. My neighborhood has many dogs enjoying the mountain air. I live on sort of a flat street, so people who walk by my home daily with their dogs… so many different varieties and colors, and such friendly neighbors too. I so appreciate that they clean up after their dogs as they walk the streets.

I used to have a black and white springer spaniel named Freckles, with black freckles on her nose. She was such a sweetheart, and I miss her so much that I named my orange and white cat after her. He also has freckles, although his are orange. So, upon reflection, I guess they aren’t at all alike. But I already knew the name so I never get confused or say the wrong name when calling for him. I was already used to yelling “FRECKLES!” Yeah, it echoes throughout the neighborhood… almost as loudly as that rooster crowing.

Keep it flying,
Uncle Mott

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Here Comes Summer

I’d like to begin this week with a seasonal sort of rhyme that goes sort of like this: Spring has sprung, and fall has fell. Now it’s summer and it’s hotter than…heck, yes, that’s it, hotter than heck, what the heck did you think I was gonna say? Well, there’s no...
