Thirteen teams competed at the Rim of the World Educational Foundation’s bowling tournament, held on March 28 at the Rim Bowling Center in Crestline. Each team of six bowlers was vying for the bragging rights of winning the Superhero tournament of 2026.
Many of the bowlers came dressed as their favorite superheroes – or, in the case of Cindy Gardner, her favorite villain: Cruella de Vil.
Both bowlers and spectators enjoyed pizza from the new Domino’s Pizza that just opened at the Rim Bowling & Entertainment Center.
Those competing were teams from Steve Valentine’s dance students, UCLA Mountain Bruins, Rim of the World Unified School District, Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa, Steve Valentine’s realtor office, Mountain Counseling & Training, Z-Painting, Women’s Club of Lake Arrowhead, Goodwin’s Market, Chandra Olivas’ team, Rita Spiegel’s team, Sparky Sparks’ team and Dale Mitthauer’s team.
There were some colorful team names, such as the Paint Rollers of Doom, Magnificent Marvels, Wonder Woman’s on a Roll, Ballroom Bowlers, Rowdy Rascals and T-Shirt Heroes.

The bowlers from Mountain Counseling & Training had the highest team score.
The highest individual scorer was Shawn Figureroa, who had a score of 350. However, since he is a regular bowler, he did not want to accept the prize, so he gave the prize to Patrick McCumber, the second highest scorer.
The highest team score went to the Mountain Counseling & Training team. The second-place team trophy was won by Rim’s Rowdy Rascals headed by Dale Mitthauer. The third-place team was Z-painting’s Paint Rollers of Doom.
The best individual costume went to Cindy Gardner, dressed in black and white as Cruella de Vil. The best team costume went to Rita Spiegel’s team, Wonder Woman’s on a Roll, all dressed as Wonder Woman.
“The trophies were made from old plastic covered wooden bowling pins,” explained Rim Ed board member Carol Kinzel, “and the plaques were designed and created by Rim High School CTE teacher Jared and his students, upcycling them from the classic bowling pins.” Rim Lanes is one of the few bowling alleys in Southern California that still has pure wooden lanes, not made of composite wood like the newer bowling centers. Avid bowlers travel up to Crestline just to bowl on those classic wooden lanes.
The music was provided by DJ Frank, a Rim High graduate. He volunteered his time and musical expertise, keeping the bowlers entertained with great “bumping” music during the afternoon for Rim Ed.
Judging the costume contest were Dale Mitthauer, the Domino’s regional manager, with Allen Mairs and Vicki Vargas.
“The bowling tournament could not have taken place without the support of many volunteers and Rim Ed supporters in the community including Job Romo, the new owner of Rim Bowling & Entertainment Center,” said Ana Rojas, who coordinated the bowling event. “We want to thank Dr. Sevillano, superintendent of the Rim of the World Unified School District, and school board members Cindy Gardner, Jordana Ridland, Jordan Zarate and Scott Craft for joining as fellow competitors. We also want to recognize Terry Sullivan and his team from the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa for their year-round support of Rim Ed.”
The mission of the Rim of the World Educational Foundation is to raise funds to support high quality educational programs that enhance student achievement. Among those programs at the CTE/ROP (Career Technical Education/Regional Occupational Program) classes, the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program and the School Partnership Awards for all the Rim campuses.
Rim Ed’s vision is to enrich the potential of students in order for them to be successful and productive members of society.
Rim Ed’s upcoming fundraiser, The Phantom’s Masquerade Ball, will take place on May 16 at 4 p.m. at the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa. For more information, visit rimedfoundation.org.
