On Monday, May 4, members of the four EarlyAct Clubs at Valley of Enchantment Elementary School enjoyed pizza and ice cream sundaes as a way to celebrate their year of service.
The Crestline-Lake Gregory Rotary Club sponsors the clubs in the second, third, fourth and fifth grades at the school. Each club chooses an area in which they would like to do their service; they raise funds by volunteering at school events, like dances.
The second-grade club, with teacher Melinda Turner as advisor and Mary-Justine Lanyon as the Rotary liaison, met once a month this year. They learned about the 4-Way Test, presented as 4 Awesome Questions. They made repeated efforts to clean up the school’s lost-and-found closet.
Mark Warhol is the teacher-advisor for the third-grade club with Stanley Oswalt as the Rotary liaison. Each year they complete a service project on the school campus. This year they are planting flowers in a trough to beautify the grounds and are creating a hiking trail.
The fourth-grade club has teacher Jessica Mazakas as advisor and Linda Oswalt as the Rotary liaison. Their service each year is focused on an international project.
Stephanie Plemons is the fifth-grade club’s advisor with Mary-Justine Lanyon as the Rotary liaison. They look at the community and vote on ideas for service they can do there. This year they are using the funds they raised to purchase books, coloring books and crayons to donate to Mountains Community Hospital. Those items will be given to children who are there for treatment or who are accompanying parents in need of medical care.
The third, fourth and fifth-grade clubs met twice a month this year. The first meeting is a formal meeting, conducted in the same manner as a Rotary Club meeting, including reciting the 4-Way Test. The second meeting is called “creative,” where they work on a project.
Each club elects its officers, who run the meetings with only occasional advice from the advisor and liaison.
Congratulations to these young leaders. The party was well deserved. Many thanks to Honorary Rotarian Bill Mellinger, who provided the pizza.
