On this day, said Kevin Somes, president of the Running Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, “we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.”

The Running Springs chamber holds an observance every Memorial Day, keeping a promise Somes made to the late Joan Moseley, who had started the tradition.

“As we spend time with friends,” Somes added, “remember the heroes who never came home.”

After he recited the poem “In Flanders Fields,” chamber board member Cathy Clemens led the singing of several patriotic songs: “America the Beautiful,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “God Bless America.”

Somes then recognized the veterans who were present at the observance: Steve Peter, U.S. Air Force; James Van Velzer, U.S. Navy; and Adrian Gonzalez, U.S. Marine Corps. Gonzalez was one of three Arrowbear Lake firefighters in attendance.
