The Saturday, June 6 opening day ceremonies of the Lake Gregory Yacht Club, which was celebrating its 30th anniversary, took place on the eastern lakeshore of Lake Gregory in front of Leisure Shores.
Following the winter closure of the yacht club, this year’s yachters gathered and began greeting old friends and chatting about what they’ve been doing since the last time they met.
There was also much discussion about the plans the Lake Gregory Yacht Club has for constructing a new clubhouse, since the old clubhouse was destroyed by Snowmageddon a few years ago. One club member announced that a parcel of land on Lake Drive in Lake Gregory Village had already been purchased for the new clubhouse. That prompted a lot of talk of plans and desires for what the clubhouse should include.
As they waited for the ringing of the bell to announce the beginning of the opening day ceremonies – the cannon usually used was destroyed in the collapsed building – Rick Dinon, vice commodore of the Lake Gregory Yacht Club, announced that Brian Randall will serve as this year’s commodore of the West Coast Yacht Club and Elena Yucsa the vice commodore of the Southern California Yachting Association.
The Mountain Fifes & Drums Corps marched in, playing “God Bless America” and “Yankee Doodle.”
Members from other clubs who had come up the mountain were impressed with the opening ceremony. The Lake Gregory Yacht Club had been recognized for five years in a row as the “Best Yacht Club in Southern California” prior to their building being destroyed.
The Southern California Yachting Association has changed its rules, making the Lake Gregory club ineligible to win for two years after their five-year winning streak in order to give other clubs a chance to win. However, Lake Gregory has its sights set on winning the trophy again; their previous trophies were also destroyed as a result of Snowmageddon.
