Several dozen community members and visitors from throughout Southern California, along with about a dozen law enforcement personnel, descended upon Mountain Coffee Co. around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8. Mountain Coffee Co. is based in a specialized trailer on Highway 173 in Cedar Glen.  These community members came to enjoy a “cup of joe” and assorted pastries, while they mingled, chatted and became acquainted with one another.

One group of three visitors from San Diego, which was enjoying coffee, lattes and bagels, was asked how they found out about this twice-yearly event. Sarah Kaufman said she learned about it on Facebook and other social media. Kaufman, a first-time visitor staying at her family cabin, added that she loves the beautiful, forested area around Lake Arrowhead and Crestline, especially Lake Gregory, where she rented a Duffy boat for the afternoon.

Seated nearby at another table was Brittainey, who moved to the mountain six years ago. Her 2-year-old son, Theo, was excited to get his junior sheriff’s badge.

Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station Commander Capt. Craig Harris was asked what kinds of crimes were trending in the mountaintop communities. This reporter was surprised to learn that the number of break-ins and burglaries was lower than usual. Harris, who has been stationed at the Twin Peaks Station for decades and in law enforcement for 25 years, said he really enjoys interacting with the community, especially in this casual, social manner.

The big story at the Twin Peaks station is the upgrading of the support for the deputies through upgrades in their exercise room and their work areas. They are tight on space, as the county building where the sheriff’s station is located was built in 1975 for a much smaller sheriff’s workforce, both in the office and command areas. It has expanded its operations into the area where the courtroom was previously located, with an expanded mental health support, Citizens on Patrol (COP), Explorer Scouts and other programs.
