It was on June 11, 1946, that James Read founded what became Grocery Outlet. It transitioned from buying and selling World War II government surplus food to launching its independent operator store model in 1973. That was followed by the addition of fresh produce and meat in 1999 and the early 2000s.

In 2024, Ryan and Claudia Tucker became independent operators with the opening of the Grocery Outlet in Blue Jay.

The Tuckers will be celebrating Grocery Outlet’s 80th anniversary with sales and giveaways on Aug. 14, 15 and 16.

Among the sales will be fresh, boneless, skinless chicken breasts for just $1.80 a pound and cage-free large eggs for 80 cents a dozen.

On Saturday, Aug. 15, shoppers will receive a free 80th anniversary reusable bag with a $50 purchase. And there will be scratch and win coupons for the first 100 shoppers.
