Driver arrested for DUI after fleeing traffic stop

On Aug. 8, at 4:03 p.m., Big Bear deputies observed a vehicle crossing over the double yellow lines and traveling into the opposing lane. Deputies initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle by activating the emergency overhead lights and sirens. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Robert Valenzuela, 55 of Big Bear City, failed to yield to deputies. Valenzuela drove for approximately half a mile, crossing over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic several times until the vehicle came to a stop.

When the driver exited his vehicle, deputies observed multiple signs that the driver was intoxicated. After further investigation, deputies determined the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Deputies arrested Valenzuela for felony evading a police officer and driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a BAC of .08 percent or more. Valenzuela was held at High Desert Detention Center on $50,000 bail. He was arraigned at the San Bernardino County Superior Court on Aug. 12 where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. His pre-preliminary hearing was set for Aug. 29 and preliminary hearing for Aug. 24.
