We put out the call and the community answered it.

On Sunday, Sept. 27 our Rotary Club hosted a community BBQ at the San Moritz Lodge, one of three fundraisers we are holding to raise money for the free community Thanksgiving dinner.

Pre-event ticket sales were sparse but we know how the mountain mind works. As the doors opened, folks started showing up. In the end, we had about 100 guests at the BBQ.

They enjoyed either a pulled pork sandwich or a burger, accompanied by baked beans, a corn salad, potato salad and coleslaw – all prepared by Chef Fred Keville.

Desserts were brought by members of the community, including several from members of the Lions Club – a perfect example of one service club coming to the aid of another.

We are grateful to the Lake Gregory Co. for donating the use of the San Moritz Lodge; their staff helped with both the set-up and the cleanup following the event.

We also extend tremendous thanks to Goodwin’s Market, Grocery Outlet and the Lake Arrowhead Rotary Foundation for making monetary donations that covered the cost of the food for the BBQ. That meant that every dollar of the $20 ticket is going toward the Thanksgiving dinner.

Many members of the Lake Arrowhead Rotary Club came to help set up, stayed all afternoon and then helped clean up – a simple thank you hardly seems sufficient.

We also have to thank the businesses that donated items for our silent auction and raffle – Sycamore Ranch, SecureTech, Hearth & Sage, Encompass, Mystwood Gallery, Brian Pellis, Nicole Cooper and Charyle Bishop.

And we can’t forget the musicians who donated their time and talent: Dale Fisher, Duane Stinnett, Tom Fernandez, Destiny Love and TJ Roger. They made the afternoon extra special.

We have one more fundraiser coming up: Daytime Bingo on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Leisure Shores at the Crest Forest Senior Citizens Club. Doors will open at 11:00 a.m. with food service ($10) beginning then. Chef Fred will be preparing spaghetti, meatballs, veggies, salad and garlic bread. Dessert and sodas will be available for an extra purchase.

Bingo games will start at noon; buy-in is $25, with pull tabs and 50/50 tickets available for purchase. Players must be over 18. This is an all-cash event.

Come on out for some lunchtime fun!
